PORTS OF CALL

Monday, August 2 - Board Ship in Rotterdam, The Netherlands
Often called the gateway to Europe, the port city of Rotterdam is full of old-world charm. The harbor offers amazing views, and a maze of wharves and canals along with towering spires make for a beautiful sight. Take a stroll and duck into one of the pubs or eateries along the way. Only three pre World War II buildings in the city center have survived and are worth a look - city hall, St. Laurence church, and the White House. Explore the Museum Boymans van Beuningen, which houses a unique collection dating from the 14th century, or the Museum Voor Volkenkunde - home to ethnological exhibits. Exquisite architecture can be seen in many areas of Rotterdam, most notably in the Delfshaven quarter of the city - where 18th century houses are on display. For a laugh, check out Kijk-Kubus, an upside-down house. Sample shore excursions: Gouda Highlights; Panoramic Rotterdam and Harbor Cruise; The Hague Highlights and Delft Delights; and Windmills of Kinderdijk.

Tuesday, August 3 - Portland, United Kingdom
Your visit to Portland and the English countryside of County Dorset will be rich in scenic beauty and centuries-old history. Visit the ancient village of Cerne Abbas and admire its beautiful 14th-century church and 16th-century houses; explore Sherbourne Castle, commissioned by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594; and marvel at prehistoric Stonehedge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sample shore excursions: Beauty and the Beast; Historic Corfe Castle; Stonehedge & Salisbury; and Stunning Sherborne Castle.

Wednesday, August 4 - St. Peter Port, United Kingdom
Her deep, safe anchorage and relative remoteness from France made St. Peter Port the Channel Islands’ premier port, graced by the wealth of ship builders, privateers, and merchant adventurers. Georgian and Regency styles were enriched by an influx of French emigrés, including Victor Hugo who made his home at Hauteville House to write Les Miserables. Renoir also painted a number of his masterpieces here. Today the town is a captivating blend of styles, framed by a tumble of terraces and tiered gardens and criss-crossed by worn steps and hidden alleys. Built into a steep valley leading down to the harbour, the town offers spectacular views across to Alderney and the other islands and is amongst the 50 most historic towns in England and Wales. Here bistros, restaurants, and boutiques jostle for your attention, while in the harbor ferries are readied to take you to the sister islands. Sample shore excursions: Guernsey Island Drive and Special Reception at Spectacular Castle Cornet.

Thursday, August 5 - Dunmore East (Waterford), Ireland
Dunmore East is a charming little fishing port and seaside resort on the southern coast of Ireland, near the mouth of Waterford Harbor. For those who like swimming there are secluded coves and sandy beaches. There is no better place than Dunmore East for strolling with its busy fishing harbor, thatched cottages, and beautiful marine views. There is also a thriving music and arts scene here with numerous galleries to browse. Nearby Waterford City, the oldest city in Ireland, hosts a collection of pubs, gourmet restaurants, and excellent shops and boutiques. Waterford boasts an excellent choice of world-class visitor attractions from the spectacular Copper Coast Geopark and the Waterford Museum of Treasures to the Waterford Crystal Visitor Centre, renowned the world over for the craftsmanship of its master glass cutters. Indulge in a little retail therapy in the world’s largest display of Waterford Crystal and take time to unwind in the charming restaurant. Sample shore excursions: A Taste of Waterford: Wake and Bake; Coastal and Countryside Drive with Irish Pub; Medieval Kilkenny & Castle; and Exploring Tipperary.

Friday, August 6 - Dublin, Ireland
Dublin, the fair city, invites you to wander the streets trod by Joyce, Yeats, and Oscar Wilde. Drop in at pubs with mahogany bars and stained glass. In the Trinity College Library, feast your eyes on the illuminated 9th-century Book of Kells. Sample the stout at Guinness Brewery. Shopping is a dream - from a souvenir shillelagh to Waterford crystal. Sample shore excursions: A Taste of Dublin: The Guiness Experience; Be Irish for a Day; Dublin Literary Pub Crawl; Irish Pub Dinner in the Old Barn; Powerscourt Gardens with Shopping; and The Fair City and Dublin Castle.

Saturday, August 7 - Holyhead, United Kingdom
Holyhead is rarely billed as a specific holiday destination; however, it does enjoy a high profile on account of its status as a ferry port and as part of the Isle of Anglesey, which is a well established and popular holiday spot. Breakwater Country Park is a 106-acre former quarry situated on the coast at Holyhead. The breakwater is one of the longest in the world and the wildlife is varied, but most notable are seals and numerous species of birds including stonechat, peregrine falcon, oystercatchers, and cormorants. The breathtaking cliff top site of South Stack Cliffs boasts trails, a visitor centre, and closed circuit TV to view nesting birds. From Ellin’s Tower visitor centre you can watch puffins, fulmars, guillemots, and razorbills busy with their broods. You can also visit the Ty Mawr hut group, an Iron Age settlement near South Stack with substantial remains of 20 original circular huts. Stroll the wooded gardens of Carreglwyd, which surround a 17th century mansion. Visitors to Holyhead can enjoy the town’s natural beauty and historic attractions while having access to a great selection of interests throughout Anglesey.
Sunday, August 8 - Greenock (Glasgow), United Kingdom
Located on the River Clyde, Greenock is on the steep west coast of Scotland, offering spectacular views to the mountains beyond. From the looming Victorian tower in Cathcart Square to the McLean Museum and Art Gallery on Union Street, you’ll find plenty to see and do. Head to Craig’s Top for magnificent views from the summit of Lyle Hill, or head to nearby Glasgow to view its fine cathedral and art galleries. Sample shore excursions: Artists’ City and Kelvingrove; Glasgow’s Shipbuilding and Heritage Trail; Landscapes, Locks, and Sheep Dogs - Scottish Experience; Panoramic Scottish Lochs; and Stirling Castle.

Monday, August 9 - Belfast, United Kingdom
The ancient city of Belfast lies snuggled into the rugged coast of Northern Ireland where the River Lagan flows to the sea. Inland from this legendary city lie the forever green lands of Ulster Province. This city presents an attraction to anyone eager to view its physical beauty and meet its friendly citizens. Enjoy a performance at the Grand Opera House, shop along trendy Donegall Place, and visit pubs lining The Golden Mile. Sample shore excursions: Belfast City and Crumlin Road Gaol; Mount Stewart House, Gardens, and Temple of Winds; Spectacular Antrim Coast and the Giant’s Causeway; and Traditional Irish Fare and the Mighty Carrickfergus Castle.

Tuesday, August 10 - At Sea

Wednesday-Thursday, August 11-12 - South Queensferry (Edinburgh), United Kingdom
Edinburgh offers year-round, sophisticated entertainment in hundreds of small performance venues. The castle, Arthur’s Seat and a labyrinth of tunnels and dungeons provide similar excitement for history buffs, whilst those simply looking for a place to shop in fine style will not be disappointed either. There is a constant, inexplicable air of romance within this ancient city that entices visitors to return to this beautiful place time and again. Sample shore excursions: Bannockburn and Stirling: The Story of Robert the Bruce; Edinburgh Highlights and Castle; Glasgow on Your Own (Transfer to Glasgow); Medieval Scotland; Royal Experience; and The Trossachs Panoramic.

Thursday, August 12 - Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
With a 2000 year-old history, and picturesque location in the heart of Northumbria, Newcastle is an awesome sight, with its River Tyne crossed by six bridges, each one with a story all its own - the latest one being Gateshead Millennium Bridge. The main shopping street in the city is Northumberland Street, and most of the top attractions can be seen on foot in the city center. From Earl Grey’s Monument, stroll Grey Street and enjoy its fine Georgian architecture - including the impressive Theatre Royal. The Castle Keep is on the site of an 11th century ‘New Castle’ built by William the Conqueror’s son. Don’t miss Blackfriars, a 13th century Dominican monastery - and Hadrian’s Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and perhaps the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain. Tour its forts and turrets or simply walk a span of it through the magnificent countryside. Sample shore excursions: Bamburgh Castle, Scenic Coastal Drive, and Alnwick Garden; Historic Durham and Castle; Newcastle Highlights; Roman Hadrian’s Wall; The Best of York; and The Very Best of Rural England - Fine Art and Cream Teas.

OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

Apply the pertinent physical and behavioral sciences - to include but not be limited to advanced anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, chemistry, physics, psychology, and social sciences - as they impact and are affected by the planning, delivery, and monitoring of anesthesia and related services inherent in the anesthesia professions.

Explain the selection, dosing considerations with methods of administration, safe use, and contraindications and precautions of presented pharmacological agents through the understanding of their physico-chemical properties, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, updated uses, and more recently developed additional, related, and similar drugs.

Outline comprehensive management plans for the group of patients discussed, whether related in age, physical status, cultural background, invasive procedure, anesthetic or analgesic requirements, clinical setting, adverse reactions, and/or goals of care.

Apply the principles of safety and asepsis in the performance of anesthetic procedures and administrations, equipment use, and other applications encountered during the provision of anesthesia and analgesia whether in the surgical unit, the labor and delivery suite, the pain management clinic, or other more remote location of anesthetizing services.

Incorporate the appropriate recommendations and/or requirements of pertinent external organizations, institutions, and professional groups - recognized as serving as the authority for and/or holding the responsibility to compile and approve such tenets - in the provision of anesthesia and related services, whether medical, legal, philosophical, ethical, or health care management standards.
